An apartment, by intentional design, offers smaller living spaces to better fit the lifestyles and budgets of many different people. While a smaller home may be just what you need or want, there are things you can do to help make apartment life easier.

By following some simple minimalist tips, you will find it easier to fit your belongings, your loved ones, and your lifestyle into your apartment.

What Is Minimalist Living?

Minimalist living is more than just a fad; it’s a lifestyle that is meant to help people live with less for a more fulfilling life. Minimalism focuses on clearing your life of unnecessary possessions or expenses to help you focus on relationships and experiences, be free of financial stresses, and allow you to live with clearer purpose.

While a complete minimalist lifestyle may not be right for everyone, there are several principles and ideas that can be taken from a more minimal perspective that can help you to better fit your life into the smaller living space of an apartment. 5 Main Tips From a Minimalist Lifestyle for Apartment Living

The key to minimalist living isn’t to get rid of all your stuff or live with nothing. It is to simply live with only the things you truly need, the expenses you can truly afford, and commit to things that add to your life.

1. Take an Inventory of Your Space

Start by taking a step back and assessing your apartment, belongings, and lifestyle. A mental and visual inventory of all that you have and the space you have it in can be just what you need to help you determine if there are areas in which you could be living with less.

If you begin to feel stressed, overwhelmed, or even annoyed about closets that are overflowing or material possessions that you don’t need, chances are you will benefit from minimizing your belongings and consolidating your lifestyle to only what is truly necessary.

2. Adopt a New Outlook on Things

Two of the core principles of a minimalist lifestyle are to be happy with what you have and to determine what you truly need. Changing your focus can be incredibly freeing and help you to part ways with that stuff that just sits in the far corner of a linen closet or collects dust underneath your bed.

The focus is to be satisfied with having what you need rather than filling your life, and your apartment, with unnecessary items. And more importantly, be grateful for what you have so that you don’t find yourself continually pursuing more. You can also choose to free yourself from feeling obligated to keep items simply because you feel guilty to get rid of them.

3. Declutter and Declutter Some More

In order to truly be satisfied with less, you will first need to reach a point where you have less. Going through every room in your home and making a commitment to clearing out what you don’t need or don’t want can be difficult and tedious, but it will ultimately allow you to reach a point where you are truly living with less.

Effectively decluttering your apartment starts by getting rid of anything you can openly see that you could live without. Go through items on furniture, on the floor, or spilling out of drawers and give away whatever you know you can live without.

Next, get rid of anything you have more than enough of. Do you really need two copies of the same movie? After that, you can move on to clearing out things you never use. No, you don’t need to keep the box of bridal magazines from when you got married ten years ago. That awesome kitchen gadget you got on sale that you’ve never even used: that can probably go, too. And while you’re at it, free yourself of possessions that don’t add anything of value to your life.

The goal is to get to a place where you only have what you truly need and truly want. For a longer list of tips on how to start decluttering your home, click here.

4. Declutter More Often

A big full-house decluttering session is undoubtedly a good place to start, but in order to keep yourself at minimums, you will probably need to go through this purging process on a semi-regular basis. Every few months, take some time to re-evaluate your stuff and your space and declutter, again and again, whenever necessary.

5. Are You Sure You Need/Want to Buy That?

Before you buy anything, stop and think about the purpose and need for it in your life. Do not buy things simply because they’re on sale or a really good deal. Don’t buy things that you don’t need and don’t even bring home free things that you don’t need. Just because it’s listed for free on Facebook Marketplace, doesn’t mean it needs to find a place in your apartment.

Before you buy anything, stop and ask yourself questions such as:

  • Why do you want to buy this?
  • Are you buying it just because it’s on sale? Is the discount a good enough reason to buy it?
  • Does this add value to your life?
  • Do you have room for this in your apartment?!
  • Is this a quality worthwhile item to spend your money on?
