Ever wonder what people in the gym are doing as you walk by and see barbells being thrown in the air, pull ups with loud grunts and lots of repetitions on the rowing machine?
Wonder no more. It’s CrossFit and it’s changing the workout regimens of many Coloradoans. In fact, Colorado ranks number 1 when it comes to CrossFit enthusiasts. If you’re tired of the same old exercises at the gym, consider joining in the Colorado CrossFit Craze.
CrossFit is a fast-paced style of working out commonly referred to as high-intensity training, or “HIT.” CrossFit has gained popularity with those that want to sweat, lose weight, and find a community of people committed to being healthy. One of the most appealing aspects of CrossFit is that it’s not just for the hard-core. Any age can do it and can benefit.
As a starter, CrossFit gyms are called, “boxes.” The workouts change daily and are called ‘WOD’s’ (workout of the day) and are posted when you walk in the door so you know exactly what you’re doing and how much you’re going to sweat.
There are a lot of benefits of CrossFit that extend beyond simply burning calories and getting moving.
CrossFit boxes have coaches, who are arguably one of the most important elements of your workout. It’s imperative that you do your homework before you join because a good coach will motivate you and a bad coach will make you quit before you even break a sweat. Ask friends and co-workers that might be currently participating in CrossFit classes, this may give you additional insight beyond a CrossFit box’s online reviews. You might even want to ask if a CrossFit box would let you try a class before you join so you can be sure you’ve found the right fit.
CrossFit workouts are tough, so just remember to push your own limits but not to the point of injuring yourself. Take breaks when you need them and remember a bruise or blister is proof that you’re actually working out and getting healthy! You can expect a workout to last about one hour with warm up, explanation of the movements, the actual workout and cool down which includes stretching.
One of the best things about CrossFit is that you instantly become a part of a tight-knit community. Classes are a great way to make new friends who cheer you on during your workout and keep you motivated. Who wouldn’t want their own cheering section, especially when it’s easy to get off the treadmill when you want? With CrossFit, you’ll have people surrounding you who want you to succeed.
In Northern Colorado, we’re lucky to have CrossFit boxes in Greeley, Fort Collins, and Loveland. Check these out:
If you’re tired of the same old routine and need a way to get in shape, make new friends and stay motivated with a healthy lifestyle, CrossFit just might the change you’re looking for.
