Fun, Affordable Winter Activities in Colorado

December 23, 2019

Northern Colorado winter activities on a budgetIf you live in Colorado, you’ve likely learned to make the most of a sunny day regardless of the temperature. The cold winter months can provide the perfect excuse to stay home at your rental, but they can also offer a number of worthwhile opportunities for fun with friends or family.

The cold can also bring a number of unexpected expenses that will take away from the disposable income in your budget. Combine those with the financial strain of holiday events and Christmas shopping, and you might be left feeling like you can’t afford to leave the house.

Thankfully, many of the most fun winter activities in Northern Colorado are budget-friendly and perfect for beating the winter blues. As a local and established Northern Colorado property management company, All Property Services understands that filling your calendar with activities can get expensive, which is why we put together this list of affordable yet memorable things to do during the winter.

Spend the Day Sledding

Every new snowstorm brings fresh snow and the perfect opportunity to spend the day or an afternoon enjoying one of the most popular winter activities. Throughout Northern Colorado, you can find great sledding hills for sledders of any age or ability. The next time it snows, grab your snow pants, gloves, hat, and sled and head out to a sledding hill near you.

Just Head Outside

Sometimes, Colorado gets hit with huge snowstorms that make it difficult to drive anywhere, but you can still have fun without being stuck inside the house. Instead of sitting on the couch all day and watching TV, throw on some warm clothes and your waterproof snow gear and head outside for some old fashioned fun. Kids and adults can both have fun building snow forts, making snow angels, or even having a snowball fight.

Go Ice Skating

Outdoor ice skating is another popular winter activity that can provide you with something fun to do without breaking your budget. Fort Collins and Loveland both have outdoor skating rinks that provide affordable admission and skate rental.

The Pond at Foothills Mall in Fort Collins is $7 for admission and $3 for skates, and there is no limit on how long you can skate. Every winter, a section of Sheldon Lake at City Park is also reserved for ice skating. At Sheldon Lake, skating is free and unsupervised, but the condition of the ice is monitored on a daily basis and is only opened for skating if the ice is at least 6 inches thick. In Loveland, the Ice Rink at The Promenade Shops at Centerra costs $8 for those 12 and under or $10 for those over the age of 13, but the cost of admission covers all-day skating, skate assistants, and complimentary skate rental.

Take a Drive in Search of the Best Christmas Lights

All throughout the month of December and sometimes past New Years Day, you will find homes decked out in impressive holiday light displays. If you’re bored one night but don’t want to do anything big, load the family up in the car and head out in search of the house with the best outdoor Christmas lights. Turn your radio to your favorite Christmas music station and stop at a local coffee shop for a hot drink and take a drive through the neighborhoods of your city. Or you can look online to determine where to find the best Christmas lights and head straight to those areas.

Go on an Adventure at Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the summer. Still, people often forget about its beauty and recreation possibilities once the snow starts to fall. RMNP is actually open all year round for people to enjoy on warm and cold days alike. At just a short drive away, you can pack some snacks, grab your warmest snow gear and head west for a day of fun in the park. If you have a favorite hiking trail during the summer, give it a try in the winter for a different point of view. Or simply drive around to take in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
