Getting Around Fort Collins: Many Means of Transportation

May 19, 2016

Whether you own a personal vehicle or not, getting around Fort Collins does not require a car. There are many convenient transportation methods to explore, travel, and commute within the city.

Bicycling

Bicycling is one of the most popular forms of transportation in Fort Collins. The City is committed to maintaining a safe bicycling community, making it both secure and convenient. Biking not only provides an efficient form of transportation, but it also keeps people active and is environmentally friendly. Fort Collins has an extensive network of bike lanes and trails that provide accessibility for residents.

In 2016, Fort Collins initiated a Bike Share system by Zagster that allows residents or visitors to rent bikes at a low fee from any of the 16 stations located around the city. The Fort Collins Bike Share accommodates customers who want to ride for recreation and those who would rather commute by bike than by car.

If you’re interested in getting involved with this innovative new program get out your smartphone, you’ll need to download their app. Once you have the app downloaded, you’ll be prompted to choose from an annual, weekly, or 24-hour membership. After your rental plan has been selected, you’ll receive a code to unlock the bike from its bike rack. When you’re done borrowing the bike, simply return it to any of the bike share locations in the Fort Collins area. For more details on this commuting option, visit Zagster’s website.

Additionally, in order to maintain the safety and efficiency of bicycling throughout the city, downtown has provided a list of bicycling regulations. Bicyclists should make sure to use hand signals when turning, equip bicycles with lights if riding at night, and wear a helmet. It is also important to remember that bicycling on sidewalks in downtown is prohibited.

Public Bus System

Transfort is Fort Collins’ public bus system with more than 20 regular bus routes and over 500 bus stops. Transfort offers residents a safe and convenient alternative for commuting and transportation. Transfort also provides riders with a number of options for accessing bus information. Bus arrival and route information is available through www.ridetransfort.com, the Ride Transfort mobile app, an automated phone system (970-221-6620), SMS texting, and message displays at bus stations.

Also part of the Transfort system is MAX Bus Rapid Transit. MAX combines many features of rail transit with the flexibility of buses. MAX follows a transit-only guide way, or in other words, its own road that runs parallel to the BNSF Railway between the South Transit Center just south of Harmony Road and Downtown. It links with Transfort bus routes, Park-n-Rides, and the trail system with 12 stations and stops. MAX information can also be accessed at www.ridetransfort.com.

Trails

Fort Collins has an extensive system of recreational trails for walking, running, or cycling. Through these trails, residents and visitors to the city alike can get around town while staying out of traffic. Trails are maintained year round and provide a healthy form of transportation for many active residents. The combination of fresh air and beautiful scenery is sure to make this “commuting option” worthwhile.

Fort Collins Trolley

For a unique way to travel between City Park and Old Town during the summer, take a ride on The Fort Collins Municipal Railway Society’s Birney Car 21. Volunteers with the FCMRS restored Car 21 to its original 1919 condition and offer rides from 12 pm to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays through September. Fares are $2 for adults, $1 for seniors and children, and free for children under three. Boarding locations are found at the City Park tennis courts, Shields Street and Mountain Avenue, Loomis Street and Mountain Avenue, and Howes Street and Mountain Avenue.
