Historically, Cinco de Mayo commemorates a day in which an ill-equipped Mexican army of Mestizo and Zapotec Indians defeated the French during their occupation of Mexico. Culturally, Cinco de Mayo is a day that celebrates the Mexican spirit.
Across the United States, Mexican culture, music, and food are celebrated on May 5th. And, Northern Colorado is no exception.
The Northern Colorado Cinco de Mayo Festival is a tradition that honors and recognizes the diversity found in Fort Collins and the surrounding communities. The Festival, which offers a wide variety of entertainment, food, and music, has brought the community together for over 30 years.
This year the Northern Colorado Cinco de Mayo Festival will be held on Saturday, May 7th, and Sunday, May 8th, at Old Town Square and the Walnut Street Corridor in Fort Collins. The two-day fiesta will begin on Saturday at 11 am and continue until 10 pm, and will run from 11 am to 7 pm on Sunday. Around 58 vendors, including food and drink, beer garden, arts and crafts, merchandise, exhibitors, and non-profits, will be featured throughout the day. Entertainment ranges from live bands and mariachi to traditional folklorico dancing. The KidZone Amusement Fairway features an inflatable bounce house and obstacle course, face painting, and a kids’ workshop from Home Depot.

The Cinco-Cinco 5K runs in conjunction with the Northern Colorado Cinco de Mayo Festival in Fort Collins. It was started in 1994 to honor Gil Gutierrez, the Ombudsman at CSU in 1993, after he was killed by a drunk driver while out jogging. The Run is held at Colorado State University to raise money for scholarships for deserving students. This year, the Cinco-Cinco 5K will be held on May 7th and will begin at the Oval on the CSU campus at 8:30 am. Each year, around 300 people participate, including children who always enjoy the Children’s Fun Run, beginning after the end of the 5K run/walk.
The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta held in Greeley is one of the largest multicultural festivals in Northern Colorado. The festival is coordinated by the Northern Colorado Latino Chamber of Commerce and will take place on Saturday, May 7th, from 10 am to 7 pm at Greeley’s Island Grove Regional Park.
2016 marks the 30th Annual Fiesta in Greeley and it’s going to be a celebration, to say the least. This year, the festivities will include live music, a kids play area that includes three “bouncy” houses, contests, and enough food vendors to satisfy the most insatiable appetite. Of course, what’s a festival without a competitive eating challenge? The Cinco de Mayo festival will have a jalapeno eating competition.
