Spring Cleaning Tips

April 20, 2016

spring cleaning tipsSpring is finally here bringing with it warmer weather, budding trees and blooming flowers. But it also brings a reminder of the deep cleaning your house or apartment so desperately needs after a cold winter. Whether you live in a house or apartment, you’re probably dreading just the thought of undertaking this necessary task. If you’re among the many that feel overwhelmed with the idea of spring cleaning, take these tips into consideration to get your home ready for summer.

Windows:

During spring cleaning, you’ll probably need to pay more attention to the exterior of your windows; chances are you’ve cleaned them inside at least a couple of times during the winter months. On a warm, wind-free day, head outside to clear off all that built-up dirt on your windows. Make sure to first close every window and remove screens.

Refrigerator:

Refrigerators usually go a long time between cleanings and you’ll be surprised how much builds up in that time. The first step to a clean fridge is to grab the trashcan and throw out anything questionable or expired. Wash all removable shelves and drawers, wipe down stationary shelves, and scrub little nooks and crannies with a toothbrush.

Fabrics:

Load up on laundry detergent and put your washing machine to work. Items you should make sure to wash include: pillows, pillow coverings, mattress pads, bath mats, shower curtains, and curtains that do not require dry cleaning. Comforters and blankets can always use a good washing, too.

Cabinetry:

Pick a day to tackle kitchen cabinetry and a different day to take on bathroom cabinets. Throughout the year crumbs and dust can pile up, so empty each cabinet out and give it a thorough wipe down. While you’re cleaning out bathroom cabinets, you may want to go through the products you have and toss out anything you don’t use or has expired.

Carpets and Rugs:

Spring cleaning is a great time to deep clean the carpets and rugs in your home. Make sure to vacuum first, and you may want to take rugs outside and give them a good shake. While you could rent a carpet-cleaning machine, it’s highly recommended you call a professional carpet cleaner to take care of it. You’ll be amazed at the difference hiring a professional can make when it comes to quality and the amount of time it takes to get the job done right.

Dust:

Go through your house and dust off any surface you see. Places that often get overlooked during the typical dusting routine are picture frames, wall décor, and decorative pieces above kitchen cabinetry, curtain rods, light bulbs, window blinds, doorframes and window frames. Remove books from bookcase shelves and dust starting from the top.

Appliances:

Like refrigerators, a thorough cleaning of other major appliances is worthwhile. Dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, and washing machines can get a buildup of dirt, grease or grime that can create odors. Vinegar and baking soda are great tools for breaking up stubborn baked-on grease or funky odors.

Garbage Cans:

Not many think to clean their garbage cans, but it is definitely something to add to your spring cleaning list. Garbage can leave lingering odors or even residue regardless of the type of trash bag you use. Take your trashcans outside and rinse them out with a hose. Let them dry in the sunlight. When you bring them back in, sprinkle a little baking soda at the bottom and you are sure to notice a difference.
