Drive Out The Winter Blues In Your Rental Home

February 28, 2020

Getting through the winter can be difficult for many people. Cold temperatures, unpredictable weather, and shorter days can make it difficult to feel happy, motivated, or positive. The winter blues can affect people who simply feel stuck in their rental house in Northern Colorado, because of the weather. Thankfully there are several things you can do to help you beat the winter blues without feeling like you’re in hibernation at home.

1. Take Advantage of When the Sun Is Shining

Colorado is famous for its sunny days and clear skies. Even on the coldest of days, the sun is often out and shining bright. Try to get yourself exposure to that sunlight as much as you can. Make a conscious effort to open the blinds and curtains on sunny days, regardless of the temperature to bring warmth and light into your home. You might also consider going out for a walk to get a little more direct exposure. Even just a little bit of sunshine can go a long way.

2. Breathe in Some Fresh Air

If the sun is shining, or even if it's not, go outside and breathe in some fresh air. You might take your dog for a walk or go on a run. You could also just wrap yourself up in your favorite blanket with a hot cup of coffee and sit outside on your patio for a little bit. In Colorado, it’s not uncommon to have a warm day between snowstorms, so make the most of those days by opening windows and letting fresh air into the house. Whether you’re stepping out of the house or opening a window, breathing in some fresh air can really help you clear your mind and reduce stress.

3. Get a Home Workout In

Don’t let the cold weather stop you from getting some physical activity. Snow, wind, and cold temperatures can make it hard for you to leave the house to go to the gym, go on a run, or on a bike ride, but don’t let it keep you from getting exercise. You could do yoga in your living room, look up a home workout video on YouTube, or even use the stairs as a home stair climber. Whatever you choose, try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise on three to five days a week. In reality, even just 10-15 minutes can make a difference because physical exercise is one of the best ways to ease the symptoms of depression or anxiety or to simply give you the boost of energy you need to get through to spring. Regular exercise from the comfort of your own home will help to release endorphins, clear your mind, keep you healthy, and help you to feel your best.

4. Change Up Your Home Décor to Brighten Up the Season

Outside your window it may look dull and lifeless, but it doesn’t have to look the same inside your home. If the leaf-less trees and brown grass is bringing you down, try changing the décor inside your home to create a more uplifting environment. You might add throw pillows with bright colors or set out a vase with fresh flowers. Choose decorative pieces with colors that make you smile and brighten up those winter blues.

5. Liven Up the House With Some Plants

Studies have shown that adding houseplants can boost mood, reduce stress, encourage productivity, and improve concentration among many other benefits. By adding a few indoor plants, you can improve the air quality in your home while adding a therapeutic touch of color and texture that can help you feel better.

6. Use Your Kitchen to Help You Keep a Healthy Diet

For countless people, food provides a form of comfort, but it can also make you feel worse if you’re struggling with the winter blues. Instead of over-indulging in sweets and junk food, make the most of your rental home kitchen and cook up healthy, balanced meals that will help you feel your best. Choosing fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins over fatty, fried or processed foods can have a big impact on your health and mood.

7. Invite People Over

When you’re feeling sad or blue, it’s sometimes easier to just avoid social situations. Although it’s tempting to stay home alone at your rental house, push yourself to maintain social activities with the people you care about. Whether you invite a friend over for coffee, host a dinner party for family, or have a game night, maintaining social interaction with people who lift your spirits can make quite a difference.

8. Stick to a Daily Routine

It may not seem like it would help, but sticking to a daily routine at home can really help set the stage for a positive day. Daily habits such as making your bed every morning, doing the dishes, following a cleaning schedule, and going to bed at a reasonable time can really help you to feel accomplished and productive.
