2020 New Year Resolutions for Renters

January 8, 2020

2020 resolutions for rentersAt the start of each new year, people find themselves making resolutions for everything from their health and fitness to their daily lives at home in their Northern Colorado apartment rental.

This January is unique because it is not just the beginning of a new year, it is the beginning of a new decade and with that is the opportunity to make resolutions that will last beyond 2020. Here are 7 simple-to-keep resolutions for renters this new year and decade that will help you live your best life at home.

1. Do Away With What You Don’t Need

Decluttering your home may seem like a stereotypical New Year’s resolution, but it is one that will prove to be worthwhile. Living in an apartment of any size can place limits on the amount of storage space you have available, making it easy for stuff to pile up and take away from the relaxing feeling of being at home. You can find countless tips and ideas for decluttering an apartment, but you can start right away by just getting rid of the things you know you don’t need or want.

2. Set Up a Plan for Your Monthly Bills

Managing your finances can be one of the most stressful aspects of life, but you can make things a little bit easier on yourself by setting up a monthly plan for your rent and bills. Creating a budget will help you manage your income, while creating a payment schedule will help you stay on top of due dates and payments.

Make a list of your monthly bills with due dates and average amounts and compare that list with your paycheck schedule. While certain bills must be paid by the first of the month, such as your rent, there are other bills that you may be able to adjust the due date to meet your needs. When possible, you might also consider setting up automatic payments that are taken out of your checking account on a set date each month. With just a little organization, you can make it easier to pay monthly bills on time and avoid paying late fees in 2020.

3. Make Small Conscious Changes to Daily Habits

Life can get very busy, regardless of your personal circumstances. The busier you are, the easier it can be to make a bad habit of having bad habits and the harder it becomes to stay productive and organized at home. To help you stay on top of things at home, try to make small changes to your daily habits. Take a moment to evaluate your daily life and identify any small changes that could make a difference. For example, make it a point to wash your dishes as soon as you’re done eating. Dishes left in the sink will inevitably pile up, leaving you with an even bigger mess to clean. Another idea would be to hang up coats or put your shoes in the closet as soon as you take them off. Just a few small steps and you can minimize what you have laying around the house.

4. Create a Cleaning Schedule

No one likes to live in a dirty or messy apartment rental, but not everyone has the time to clean to keep it from happening. Rather than putting off cleaning until you can’t take it anymore, consider creating a cleaning schedule that is easy to follow with your schedule. With just minutes each day, you can avoid having to do everything all at once. Set up a different household chore for each day of the week and consider tackling one bigger task a month. A little bit each day will go a long way in keeping your apartment clean and organized.

5. Meet Your Neighbors

Regardless of how long you’ve lived in your current apartment, don’t underestimate the value in getting to know your neighbors. Building relationships with the people living in the house next door or the apartment down the hall can be helpful and rewarding. Take the time to be a good neighbor when you have an opportunity to do so and allow others to be good neighbors to you. You might find the help you need when you need to move furniture around or you might find the perfect company for a Friday night.

6. Make the Space Feel Like Home

By nature, living in a rental home can often feel like you’re living in someone else’s house. Although you cannot make any permanent changes or additions to the home, there are small actions that can help make your rental feel more like home. You can add your own personal touch to any rental through your furnishings and decorations. Invest in pieces that will reflect your style and make the space welcoming for you and your guests.

7. Treat Your Rental Like It’s Your Own

Keep in mind that you do live in someone else’s home and you are responsible for caring for it. By treating your rental as if it were your own, you will keep the home in better condition for both you and your landlord. Stay on top of daily maintenance and actions that will help you keep the home in good condition
