Activities to Do This Summer in Fort Collins

Outdoor Activities

Looking for a great way to spend your summer in Fort Collins? Colorado is known for its great nature scene, and Fort Collins is no anomaly. Fort Collins is exceptional for a Colorado city because rivers, lakes, and reservoirs surround it. People take full advantage of the water with kayaks, paddle boards, and, of course, rafts

Whitewater rafting on the Cache la Poudre River is also a must-do activity if you're visiting. Good luck finding another activity that offers such high safety and adrenaline levels. There are many companies that offer the service, so do your research before you arrive.

If you're reluctant to raft or kayak but still like water, fishing is a good fallback option. Dixon Reservoir, Horsetooth Reservoir, and the Poudre River are all great places to spend the day. Bring a paddleboard if you want to make it a little more exciting; there are dozens of hidden coves that you’ll be able to paddle in for hours.

For the adventurous and active, Fort Collins boasts over 280 miles of trails. The most popular area to explore is Horsetooth Mountain (named after the tooth-shaped rock visible from the city). The open space has over 29 miles of trails on which you can hike, bike, or even ride horseback. There are dozens of other trails to choose from, ranging from easy hikes to strenuous 10+ mile trails.

Discovering the Old Town Historic District

Fort Collins was a military outpost for the Army in 1864 (hence the name "Fort"). Settlers began to arrive there once the base was set up and the fort demilitarized three years later. You can get a glimpse of what settler life was like by visiting the Old Town district.

It's been so well-preserved that the Old Town District attracts thousands of tourists every year. It has received many distinguished awards, making it a national attraction for history junkies.

Over 20 historical buildings from the 1860’s are still standing and thriving. If you’re interested in finding out even more about the history of the city, visit the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery.

The museum presents a combination of the culture and history of Fort Collins and the surrounding areas. There are thousands of artifacts that belonged to the Natives of the land to show what life was like back then. Many of the exhibits are interactive and entertaining for everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. If you want a more contemporary example of the city, there are plenty of tours.

Breweries and Tours

Guided tours, bike tours, and brewery tours are the best ways to discover the social scene in Fort Collins. Fort Collins has many award-winning breweries and they attract tourists from all over the world. The most notable brewery in Fort Collins is Anheuser-Busch, which is the largest brewing company in the US. The Fort Collins location is also home to the Budweiser Clydesdales West Coast Team, so you can get a personal encounter with the famous horses on your tour.
